How to Recycle Metals from Discarded Bicycles?

Aug 03, 2026

With the continuous increase in the stock of discarded bicycles, large quantities of high-quality metal resources, such as frame steel, aluminum alloy rims, and copper parts, are accumulating idle. Traditional manual dismantling is inefficient and results in insufficient purity during sorting. An integrated crushing and sorting production line, utilizing a waste bicycle shredder and a waste bicycle crusher working in tandem, can automatically complete the crushing of the entire bicycle, material separation, and metal purification, achieving large-scale, environmentally friendly metal recycling and building a complete chain for the resource utilization of discarded bicycles.

The entire waste bicycle crushing and sorting line consists of four major processes: pre-treatment, two-stage crushing, intelligent sorting, and finished product collection. Upon arrival at the plant, discarded bicycles undergo simple pre-treatment, with manual removal of non-metallic components such as tire rubber, plastic seats, and brake lines to prevent soft materials from entangled in the blades and damaging the equipment. The entire bicycle is then smoothly fed into the first process—the dual-shaft shredder—via a chain conveyor. The shredder, relying on low-speed, high-torque alloy steel blade shafts, can shred an entire bicycle into 8-15 cm pieces without disassembling the frame. It also breaks up tangled chains and spokes, reducing volume and solving the problem of large materials taking up too much space during transport. Simultaneously, it initially removes loose paint and rust from metal surfaces, and a fully enclosed dust removal system controls dust pollution throughout the process.

The coarsely crushed material is then conveyed via a closed conveyor belt to a heavy-duty crusher for secondary fine crushing. Inside the crusher, high-speed hammers continuously strike and knead, pulverizing the lumps into uniform, fine metal particles. This thoroughly removes attached paint, oil, and plastic debris, and also breaks up twisted and deformed metal components, resulting in uniformly sized material that lays the foundation for precise sorting. Unqualified large-sized materials are returned to the crusher for further processing via a screening machine, ensuring consistent output specifications. This entire crushing process replaces heavy manual disassembly, processing tens of tons of scrap bicycles daily and significantly reducing labor costs.

After the crushing process, the material enters the core sorting stage of the entire line. The materials first pass through a multi-stage magnetic separator, where magnetic fields precisely adsorb and separate ferrous metals such as carbon steel frames, screws, and chains. The purified scrap steel is directly packaged and briquetted before being sent to a steel mill for remelting into industrial raw materials such as steel pipes and hardware. The remaining mixture enters an eddy current separator, which uses electromagnetic induction to separate non-ferrous metals such as aluminum alloy rims, cranks, and small amounts of copper pipes and nuts. Rubber and plastic residues are separately screened and classified. This combined sorting method can separate steel, aluminum, and copper, achieving a metal purity of over 95%, significantly enhancing the market value of recycled metals.

After sorting and purification, the various metal materials are bundled, packaged, and transported. The energy consumption for recycled aluminum smelting is only about 5% of that for primary aluminum production, and recycled steel smelting can significantly reduce waste gas and wastewater emissions from mining and blast furnace smelting. If discarded bicycles are carelessly dumped, rusted steel can seep into the soil and groundwater, causing pollution, and accumulated waste also poses a fire hazard. The automated crushing and sorting production line operates in a closed loop, efficiently revitalizing scrap metal resources, reducing the consumption of primary minerals, and eliminating the environmental problems caused by the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste.

In short, the coordinated operation of shredders for coarse crushing, crushers for fine crushing, and intelligent sorting lines has revolutionized the extensive manual recycling model, transforming discarded bicycles from idle waste into high-quality recycled metal raw materials. This mature mechanized recycling system balances economic and ecological benefits and is an important path to promoting the resource utilization of solid waste and practicing a low-carbon circular economy.
