Mobile Waste Metal Recycling Equipment Selection: MSTD670 Shredder vs Stationary Crusher

Jun 24, 2026

Before comparing selection scenarios, it's crucial to clarify that the MSTD670 Mobile Shredder and a Stationary Metal Crusher (Hammer Mill) belong to different stages of the recycling chain and operate on fundamentally different mechanics.

- MSTD670 Mobile Shredder: A dual-shaft, low-speed, high-torque shear shredder, typically diesel-hydraulic driven and track/wheel-mounted. It tears and shears scrap via counter-rotating hooked blades at 10–40 RPM, producing coarse, irregular chunks (50–200 mm). Its primary role is pre-shredding / volume reduction—breaking whole ELV shells, appliances, or mixed bulky scrap into manageable pieces without generating high dust, noise, or explosion risk. It excels at handling unprepared, heterogeneous materials.

- Stationary Metal Crusher (Hammer Mill / Shredder): A high-speed impact crusher fixed to a reinforced concrete foundation, powered by electric motors (400–1000+ RPM, 1000–4000+ kW / 1500–5000+ HP). Scrap is pulverized by rotating hammers against grates/anvils, creating uniform, dense "shredded scrap" (fist-sized, <150 mm). This process liberates ferrous from non-ferrous (wire, plastics, foam) and achieves high material density for steel mill charging. It is the industry standard for secondary/final shredding in high-volume scrap yards producing furnace-ready ferrous fragment.

In practice, many large recycling plants use a hybrid flow: Mobile/stationary pre-shredder (shear type like MSTD670) → Stationary hammer mill crusher → magnetic/eddy current separation → purified metal streams.

Typical Throughput ~15–25 t/h (ELV pre-shredding); up to ~30 t/h for light scrap 30–100+ t/h for mid-size plants; large mills process 200–300+ t/h

Peak Capacity Limited by mobile chassis size, hopper volume, diesel power (~150–300 kW equivalent) Scalable to 5000+ HP units handling hundreds of cars/hour

Feed Size Whole car bodies (with minor prep), max ~2.5×2 m chunks Usually requires pre-shredded / baled / flattened feed (<~1 m³)

Output Size 50–200 mm coarse fragments 30–100 mm uniform dense scrap (adjustable via grate spacing)

Scalability Single unit per site; add more mobiles for parallel sites Integrates with conveyors, multiple-stage crushing, downstream sorting lines

The MSTD670 is designed for distributed, medium-throughput processing (scrapyards processing 5,000–20,000 t/year), while stationary crushers dominate centralized mega-yards (>50,000–100,000 t/year) where continuous high-volume output justifies infrastructure investment.
